Admission Requirements:

  • BA and MA Degree preferably in a related field of studies (Humanities and Social Sciences);
  • English Language Certificate (IELTS 7.0 minimum; TOEFL 100 + minimum 24 in all skills; Cambridge Advanced Certificate; Cambridge Proficiency; CEFR C1) [taken after January 2017]
    • Candidates without Language Certificate can take a test at the Catholic University
      • Cost: 50€
      • Dates: April 9 and 10; June 4 and 5; July 22 and 23;
  • Interview (interviews can be held through Skype).

Admission Interviews:

On a rolling basis.

(Upon admittance to the program, candidates to the FCT scholarship will be invited for a second interview with the International Steering Committee. Date: TBA)

Documents Required for Application

  • Application Form;
  • Curriculum Vitae in English;
  • Motivation letter (max. 3.000 characters) introducing yourself to the Selection Committee, explaining why you have chosen this program and why you would be a good fit;
  • Preliminary research project (max. 15.000 characters);
  • Copy of identification document (Passport or ID card);
  • 1 Passport size photo [printed photo must be presented upon registration];
  • Vaccination record (tetanus vaccine updated) [to be presented upon registration];
  • Certificate of English proficiency (as per information in the Admission Requirements section above. Native speakers are exempt from this step);
  • Copy of Transcript of Records [original documents must be presented upon registration].

For degrees earned abroad, Transcripts and Certificates must be duly translated into Portuguese (if not in English, French, or Spanish), either by the institution that issued them or by a certified translator.

NOTE: Applicants may include other documents they consider relevant to the application.

Application Process:

  1. Send all required documents to both sescolares@lisboa.ucp.pt and lxconsortium@gmail.com, together with the proof of payment of the Application Fee (110.00€). Proof of payment (including the name of the applicant, passport number or NIF, and PhD Program applied to) should also be sent to: Hugo Brandão hbrandao@lisboa.ucp.pt
  2. After sending all required documents, an interview with the candidate will take place (interviews with international candidates can be held via skype).
  3. Publication of results.

Available online at the beginning of August. Seminars usually take place from 6.30pm to 9.30pm but some classes and activities may take place at an earlier time.

Tuition and Other Fees:

  • Application Fee: 110€ (if updated in May, the difference must be paid upon registration).
  • Registration and 1st month tuition: 210€ + 360€ (1st installment of payment plan referring to September)

[note: the fees above are non-refundable, except the 1st month tuition fee for students who are awarded an FCT scholarship]

  • Tuition fees for FIRST YEAR (5 installments per semester): 360€ per month
  • Subsequent annual registration fees: 210€
  • Tuition fees for SECOND, THIRD and FOURTH YEARS (5 installments per semester): 250€ per month
