Application Dates – FCT Scholarship:

  • The period of applications will open on April 4 and run through June 1.

Admission Requirements:

  • BA and MA Degree preferably in a related field of studies (Humanities and Social Sciences);
  • English Language Certificate (IELTS 7.0 minimum; TOEFL 100 + minimum 24 in all skills; Cambridge Advanced Certificate B; Cambridge Proficiency; CEFR C1) [taken after January 2016]
    • Candidates without Language Certificate can take a test at the Catholic University
      • Cost: 50€
      • Dates: TBA;
    • Interview (interviews can be held through Skype).


Admission Interviews:

On a rolling basis.

(Upon admittance to the program, candidates to the FCT scholarship will be invited for a second interview with the International Steering Committee. Date: TBA)


Documents Required for Application

  • Application Form;
  • Curriculum Vitae in English;
  • Motivation letter (max. 3.000 characters) introducing yourself to the Selection Committee, explaining why you have chosen this program and why you would be a good fit;
  • Abstract of preliminary research project (max. 15.000 characters);
  • Copy of identification document (Passport or ID card);
  • 1 Passport size photo [printed photo must be presented upon registration];
  • Vaccination record (tetanus vaccine updated) [to be presented upon registration];
  • Certificate of English proficiency (as per information in the Admission Requirements section above. Native speakers are exempt from this step);
  • Copy of Transcript of Records [original documents must be presented upon registration].

For degrees earned abroad, Transcripts and Certificates must be duly translated into Portuguese (if not in English, French, or Spanish), either by the institution that issued them or by a certified translator.

Candidates to the FCT scholarship also need to have their foreign degrees recognized/registered – In Portugal there are two main procedures:


  • Decree-Law nº 283/83 of 21 June, which establishes a system of equivalence/recognition based on the scientific re-evaluation of the work carried out by the applicant. This procedure is for candidates whose degree was conferred in a country that is not part of the above-mentioned list. According to this diploma only higher education institutions are incumbent to decide upon awarding the equivalence/recognition. The equivalence can be done at Universidade Católica.


NOTE: Applicants may include other documents they consider relevant to the application.

Application Process:

  1. Send all required documents to both sescolares@lisboa.ucp.pt and lxconsortium@gmail.com, together with the proof of payment of the Application Fee (90.00€). Proof of payment (including the name of the applicant, passport number or NIF, and PhD Program applied to) should also be sent to: Hugo Brandão hbrandao@lisboa.ucp.pt
  2. After sending all required documents, an interview with the candidate will take place (interviews with international candidates can be held via skype).
  3. Publication of results.

Start of Academic Year:




Available online at the beginning of August. Seminars usually take place from 6.30pm to 9.30pm but some classes and activities may take place at an earlier time.


Tuition and Other Fees:

  • Application Fee: 90€ (if updated in May, the difference must be paid upon registration).
  • Registration and 1st month tuition: 200€ + 355€ (1st installment of payment plan referring to September)

[note: the fees above are non-refundable, except the 1st month tuition fee for students who are awarded an FCT scholarship]

  • Tuition fees for FIRST YEAR (5 installments per semester): 355€ per month
  • Subsequent annual registration fees: 200€
  • Tuition fees for SECOND, THIRD and FOURTH YEARS (5 installments per semester): 235€ per month
